Albuca spiralis , Frizzle Sizzle, Corkscrew Albuca

Subfamily: Scilloideae
Frizzle Sizzle, Corkscrew Albuca
Origin: South Africa
CaudexCan be used for bonsaiGroundcover and low-growing 2ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunShadeSemi-shadeModerate waterFragrant

This is one of the coolest plant you've ever grown! Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle (the Corkscrew Albuca) is a South African bulb selection with green onion-like leaves that look like they were curled with a curling iron. Each plant has its own personality...some have short, tightly curled leaves, others have taller, looser curled leaves. Over time, the bulb will multiply, resulting in a full, very wild and wacky clump. Albuca spiralis blooms in the spring with spikes of orchid-like chartreuse-yellow flowers. On occasion, Albuca Frizzle Sizzle will rebloom later in the season. Not only is this a fun plant that will capture the attention of everyone who sees it, but it is super easy to grow, too. Treat it like a succulent. Lots of sun, well draining soil, and let the soil dry between waterings. Hot and dry conditions seem to encourage the most extreme leaf coils. In norther climates, Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle is easily over wintered indoors on a sunny window sill. Or stop watering, let the bulb go dormant, and store in a cool, dry location. Fragrant yellow flowers appear in spring on flower spikes that are adorned with 10-20 blooms per spike. The blossoms have a light vanilla fragrance. Grow in full sun and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. There are no pest or disease problems with Frizzle Sizzle so it makes an ideal home garden plant thatís distinctive and eye-catching.

Very attractive ever-blooming shrub with bright yellow trumpet-like flowers. Night-scented flowers year-round. Prickly seed pods follow the flowers with winged seeds that fly about when the pod dries and breaks open. Allamanda is perennial in tropical climates and may be treated as an annual or brought inside during cold weather and replanted after danger of frost. The plant has milky sap and is considered poisonous; all parts are highly cathartic (hence the botanical name). Grows well in most soils, but becomes chlorotic in very alkaline conditions. In areas where there is seasonal change, keep fairly dry during winter and prune in spring before growth begins. It may be desirable to prune annually in any case to control for size.
