Big tree > 20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

For centuries, It has been one of the most popular and most productive tropical fruit trees in the world.Besides delicious fruit, the tree produces white, gummy latex that was an original source of chewing gum (chicle). Sapodilla is a fairly slow-growing, long-lived medium-size tree, upright and elegant, dense and distinctly pyramidal, with thick glossy green leaves. The fruit has gray-brown rough textured skin and pinkish-brown, moist, soft and delicious flesh that tastes like a pear soaked in brown sugar. Sapodilla trees fruit prolifically, at frequent intervals throughout the year.
Unlike most of tropical fruit, Sapodilla seeds remain viable for several years if kept dry. They germinate readily but growth is slow and the trees take 5 to 8 years to bear.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

var. Priestly), Hybrid Custard Apple.
Atemoya is much hardier than common Sugar Apple, and at the same time can tolerate tropical heat unlike Cherimola which requires cooler summers. It makes Atemoya an excellent choice for subtropical and tropical garden. Can tolerate light freeze. The tree growing to about twenty-five feet at maturity with about the same spread. Atemoyas have fewer seeds than Sugar Apple, which makes them a lot easier to eat as a fresh fruit.

Billbergia braziliensis - seeds

Groundcover and low-growing 2ftSemi-shadeEpiphyteRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowers

This bromeliad is very rare in cultivation and hard to find. This species is native to Bolivia and Brazil. This species must be considered one of the more spectacular and desirable of the larger growing, hummingbird pollinated Billbergia's in the Heliconidae section. Individual growths are strikingly narrow and upright, forming artistic, trumpet shaped vases. Mature growths flower reliably in a years time. The inflorescence carry bright pink bracts, below which hang the contrasting rich purple flowers. These are fresh seeds which can germinate in only a few days after planting. They are best planted being barely poked into a medium which contains peat-moss and/or finely milled sphagnum, as they require light for germination. Kept moist in a sealed bag or terrarium initially, seedlings develop amazingly quickly, and older plants will take more sunlight than the majority of bromeliads. A wonderful species who's seeds are otherwise impossible to find commercially.

Spectacular vine from Brazil with long pendulous chains of fiery orange-red flowers. Heavy vine, needs a large support. An arbor is ideal so that the brilliant flowering racemes can hang down from the ceiling. Blooms in fall and winter. Prune heavily in spring after flowering. Give full or partial sun with adequate moisture and fertilizer. It is said that it can tolerate some drought and light frost. However, its hardiness range is not yet known, probably USDA zones 9b - 11. It is still much hardier than ultra-tropical Mucuna benettii.
