Aeschynanthus radicans, Lipstick Plant

Click to see full-size image Aeschynanthus radicans
Family: Gesneriaceae
Lipstick Plant
Origin: Southeast Asia
Groundcover and low-growing 2ftVine or creeperSmall shrub 2-5 ftShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowers

Aeschynanthus is a large genus of Old World tropical herbs. In many respects, they are analogous to the genus Columnea in Central and South America -- both are most often trailing epiphytes with fairly large and showy flowers that are frequently pollinated by birds. The appearance of the various Aeschynanthus species varies widely. The original 'Lipstick Plant' has hard-surfaced shiny leaves, with bright red flowers that emerge from a very dark red tubular calyx, in a fashion reminiscent of lipstick emerging from a tube. It is an epiphyte that grows in the angles of branches in the rain forest. As with all epiphytes, the lipstick plant does not live as a parasite on the tree, but takes its nourishment from fallen leaves and twigs that accumulate in the crevices of branches. Needs plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. They thrive in summer heat, and winter temperatures should not drop below 60 degrees.

Aeschynanthus sp., Lipstick Plant, Lipstick Vine

Click to see full-size image Aeschynanthus sp.
Family: Gesneriaceae
Lipstick Plant, Lipstick Vine
Origin: Ecuador and Colombia
Groundcover and low-growing 2ftVine or creeperSmall shrub 2-5 ftShadeKeep soil moistRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowers

A very attractive flowering vine, that is mostly used in hanging pots. Water freely durning spring to fall, but keep the soil a little drier in the winter. The trailing stems can be 2ft long, so they may need pruning after flowering has finished. The plant tolerates most house temperatures. Ideal temperatures are 60 degrees at night but 10 to 15 degrees higher during the day. A. pulcher is one of the classic lipstick plants, and is similar to A. lobbianus -- except for the tan colored calyx.

Albuca spiralis , Frizzle Sizzle, Corkscrew Albuca

Click to see full-size image Albuca spiralis
Family: Asparagaceae   (Formerly:Hyacinthaceae / Liliaceae)
Subfamily: Scilloideae
Frizzle Sizzle, Corkscrew Albuca
Origin: South Africa
CaudexCan be used for bonsaiGroundcover and low-growing 2ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunShadeSemi-shadeModerate waterFragrant

This is one of the coolest plant you've ever grown! Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle (the Corkscrew Albuca) is a South African bulb selection with green onion-like leaves that look like they were curled with a curling iron. Each plant has its own personality...some have short, tightly curled leaves, others have taller, looser curled leaves. Over time, the bulb will multiply, resulting in a full, very wild and wacky clump. Albuca spiralis blooms in the spring with spikes of orchid-like chartreuse-yellow flowers. On occasion, Albuca Frizzle Sizzle will rebloom later in the season. Not only is this a fun plant that will capture the attention of everyone who sees it, but it is super easy to grow, too. Treat it like a succulent. Lots of sun, well draining soil, and let the soil dry between waterings. Hot and dry conditions seem to encourage the most extreme leaf coils. In norther climates, Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle is easily over wintered indoors on a sunny window sill. Or stop watering, let the bulb go dormant, and store in a cool, dry location. Fragrant yellow flowers appear in spring on flower spikes that are adorned with 10-20 blooms per spike. The blossoms have a light vanilla fragrance. Grow in full sun and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. There are no pest or disease problems with Frizzle Sizzle so it makes an ideal home garden plant thatís distinctive and eye-catching.
