Origin: Central America

Yellow mandevillas are just recently gaining recognition. The flower color is almost neon yellow throughout. Grows as a vine-like shrub when it is young. Left to it own devices, it develops into a sprawling vine climbing over nearby shrubs, trees and other structures. Flowers are about 2-3 inches across, produced year-round on stem tips, although the plant is not covered with flowers like the Allamanda. There are usually some flowers on the plant all year long. Flowering period: June-October. All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested. Handling plant may cause skin irritation.

Yellow Mandevilla, Yellow Dipladenia, wild allamanda. Unusual yellow flowers of this mandevilla relative are slightly fragrant and last for a long time. This is pretty cold hardy plant that can take occasional cold spells. It is very vigorous and free flowering in full sun conditions. Easy care, little water needed and not picky about soils. Much better growing than regular mandevillas! This item is certified for shipping to California.

Bread Flower. One of the most impressive tropical vines that is very popular in Thailand and other South-East Asia countries. Moderate growth woody climber with clusters of freshly-baked-bread fragrant white flowers, it is easy to care and tolerates wide range of conditions. It can be trained as a compact bush and is good for container culture. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
This plant is relatively cold hardy according to our experience. Mild frost doesn't do any damage to it, even large tropical leaves stay glossy green and healthy. It is very vigorous grower that can create nice privacy hedge or cover a large fence.

Vandas have about 50 species, from which the many hybrids are derived from the tropics Asia and the orient as far down as Australia, they require warm growing conditions with plenty of bright light. Normally they grow best suspended in wooden baskets. They need lots of light, but will still burn when the sun reaches them through glass, so some shading is necessary, the correct level of shading has been reached when on a sunny day, your hand will cast a shadow on the plant but without a definate edge. Grow them high up, but dont forget to give them good air circulation.

Vandas like it hot, minimum night temps may fall to 55 deg. as long as the plant is thoroughly dry by nightfall and daytime temperatures in the 80s is quite ok.

See Orchid page for pictures of different orchids and care info.

Intergeneric hybrids:

Ascocenda (Ascocentrum x Vanda)

Aranda (Arachnis x Vanda)

Mokara (Arachnis x Ascocentrum x Vanda)

Kagawara (Ascocentrum x Renanthera x Vanda)

The Vanda Alliance is made up mostly of warm- and full-sun-growing orchids with colorful flowers. Originating in tropical Asia, they are easily grown in warm climates.
